We will see some modest increase in frequency and intensity of climate events but again all within the scope of what we already experience and manage. How much outdoor summer activities people near the equator will be doing may vary. The majority of individuals in every country will see improved QoL on our current trajectory and certainly the vast majority of the global population will greatly benefit. At this point it is much moreso a question of how badly affected the most vulnerable in the most vulnerable countries will be. There is no reasonable way to conclude from our current trajectory of improvement that a return to agrarian living in global poverty would cause anything less than astronomically greater suffering and human death. It's not luxuries driving energy consumption, it's basic functions of a modern society that prevent mass death and a return to 20-30 year shorter mean lifespan. But given that we cannot know, and that not knowing makes it unlikely for most individuals to freely give up what feel like normal or necessary conveniences, it may be vastly preferable to be willing to try to make some reasonable collective sacrifices. ![]() I think if we could know, most of us including me would rather give up some relative luxuries than potentially contribute to serious suffering for some to many. Then we face some profoundly difficult questions. Ideally, we can find a way to sustain and lift material living standards for all people in general, while also curbing greenhouse gas emissions sufficiently.īut what if we are in a Catch-22 situation where that is unlikely or seriously questionable? ![]() However, I think it is worth acknowledging that the materially privileged lives some/many of us live come at a cost to others, in the present and future. That said, I am an American and definitely not living a caveman lifestyle, and don't want to be living off the land with a shovel and sickle more than anyone else.
